They do, and that is precisely the risk. Knowledge held in a few heads caps growth and makes absence expensive. The aim is to get that knowledge into a system so experienced people spend their judgement on exceptions rather than on remembering where every load is.

We have tried logistics software and it did not fit.

Common, because off-the-shelf logistics platforms encode someone else's operation. Where a product fits, buying it is cheaper and we will say so. Custom work makes sense when your operating model is genuinely different and bending it to fit a product costs more than building around it.

What is the highest-value thing to automate first in logistics?

Usually customer status enquiries. They are high volume, highly repetitive, and interrupt the people doing coordination work. Automating them is contained, does not require changing dispatch, and returns time immediately. Dispatch and exception handling are bigger projects worth doing after that proves out.

Can this connect to the tracking systems we already use?

Usually yes, where those systems expose an API or a data feed. Older or highly proprietary tools sometimes do not, which occasionally changes the approach. We verify this before scoping rather than discovering it during a build.

Do we need to replace our existing systems?

Often not. A lot of logistics pain comes from systems that do not talk to each other rather than from the systems themselves. Connecting what you have is usually cheaper than replacing it and worth ruling out before considering anything larger.
